Redundancy & Interviews

Facing redundancy

Having once been made redundant myself, I understand just how devastating it can feel.  But I also know how important it is not to give in to these feelings.  I have a challenge for you – what if you knew that redundancy was the best thing to have happened to you?  How would you feel then?

Facing the pain…

The Government is demanding a leaner NHS that will still have to deliver a high quality service. The SHA’s and PCT’s have gone. The old NHS has disappeared and the biggest impact has been on NHS managers, many of whom have been made redundant.

If you find yourself facing redundancy, it is critical that your skills are fully up to date – especially as you will be entering a fiercely competitive job market.

Redundancy is an opportunity…

Not only will I equip you with effective strategies for coping with redundancy, I’ll also work with you to turn a negative situation into a positive one. Together we’ll explore potential opportunities for the future: we’ll hone your interview techniques; we’ll polish your leadership and communication skills and work on your CV; we’ll examine issues of confidence and self-management. Finally, we’ll formulate a realistic action plan. We’ll leave no stone unturned in our quest to find you a new job, relieve financial stress and place your life back on course.

It may be that you’ll want to use redundancy as an opportunity to change direction and launch upon an entirely new career. In which case, at no extra charge, I offer a powerful career profiling tool that will help you identify the perfect role for your skills and ambitions.

Creating the Right Impression at Interview

You have a limited timeframe to make a good impression. Nerves can make you stumble over your words or make your mind go blank at the worst possible moment. I run interview skills workshop every year for NHS clinicians and I very much concentrate on the need to show confidence and to communicate in a succinct and focused manner. I also offer one-to-one coaching sessions in succeeding at interview. Being a body language specialist I can give you honest feedback about how you come across, verbally and non-verbally and tailor some strategies to make you feel more positive about the impending interview.

If you’re facing the prospect of redundancy, or need to prepare for a significant career interview, don’t struggle alone. Take action today and take the first exciting step to managing your future.  Be brave, be strong and be proactive.

Good news, I got the job!! Thank you so much for all your help, I’m so grateful!  Claire Ruck

In recent years  NHS reorganisation has sought to reduce management costs and create greater efficiency without impacting on front line clinical services.  As a senior manager, after a number of rounds of re-structuring, downgrading and demoralising interviews, my self-confidence was non-existent and I felt my NHS career was going backwards.  However, I had 30 years experience, loved my work and believed I could still add value.  In 2011 when I was faced with another re-structuring my first thought was to consider voluntary redundancy to protect myself from further humiliation.   But there was an opportunity for me to apply for a more senior role. It was a role I felt more than capable of doing and well within my previous experience and skill set but it was a high risk decision as to fail could potentially force me into a role I would not enjoy.    Discovering Sarah Christie’s NHS coaching website was the first step in a journey of self discovery, new found confidence and driving ambition.

Sarah helped me put in context the previous negative experiences and move on and look to the future more positively.  She helped me focus on my strengths and most importantly helped me to develop these into highly marketable qualities and skills.   Sarah was inspirational in getting me to not only believe in myself but also helped me plan a campaign that would result in the outcome I wanted.

Over the weeks, working with Sarah, my attitude to work changed and I made use of every opportunity to enage at a more senior level, to make it clear I  was looking for promotion and was ready to take on more responsibility again.  Sarah helped me develop an action plan which was personal to me and deliverable within the timescales.

It was focused, relevant and rewarded me with growing confidence – my application was superior to any other I have ever written and was a very honest and accurate reflection of my achievements and worth.   Working with Sarah at this stage in my career was an extremely positive and much needed experience. I not only got the job I wanted but am carrying it out with inner confidence to trust  my knowledge, skills  and expereince .  I am loving every minute of it. It’s difficult but I  have no self doubt so Sarah’s magic is still working 🙂 LA, Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust
